Science Day

Today, we took a trip to Pittsford Mendon Center Elementary School and presented as a part of their event they call Science Day. Science Day gives the kids an opportunity to see exhibitions of different science fields, such as rocketry, zoology, and robotics. We packed up our robot and its control center and brought it over to the elementary school.
Once the kids were all settled in their seats, we showed them a brief PowerPoint presentation and explained what it is that FIRST teams do. Plenty of hands shot up throughout the presentation, asking us questions such as “How much did the robot cost to build?”, “What’s the best sub-team?”, and “Is that a guy in a panther costume or is it a real robot panther?”
After the presentation, we brought the robot into the main entrance’s open hallway and started it up. The kids stood in a semicircle around the atrium and watched excitedly as the robot moved sideways and spun in circles with its spiffy mechanum wheels. Liam Middlebrook, who was driving the robot during our demonstration, then invited the kids to catch the foam basketballs as the robot threw them. Liam spun the robot in circles as he readied the shooter, then “had the robot choose” a place in the eager audience to throw the ball. The kids caught the balls to wild cheers. After all three balls had been passed to the kids, Liam turned on the ball-retrieval system and asked the kids to roll the balls back to the robot, which picked them up. Lather, rinse, repeat – or perhaps we should say ‘Catch, bowl, repeat.’ This interactive game between the children and the robot captivated the kids until it was time for them to go to their next demonstration.
After three rotations and plenty of ‘ooh’s and ‘aah’s, the last group of kids left for their normal classrooms and Science Day finished - a complete success.
